Trans Voice Feminization Exercise: How do I raise my larynx?

Learning how to raise your larynx or “voice box” is a key factor in brightening or feminizing your voice.  When the larynx is raised, it creates less space in the vocal tract (area inside the throat) causing the resonance to brighten.

This is different from pitch, which refers to the perceptual quality of how high or low someone’s voice is.

When the larynx is lowered, more space is created in the vocal tract causing the resonance to darken.

It’s important to learn to raise the larynx without engaging unnecessary muscles that can cause strain or damage. Here is a quick and easy exercise to get started!

Step 1

If you feel comfortable doing so, look at yourself in the mirror.

Step 2

Find your thyroid notch, which is commonly referred to as the “Adam’s Apple”. It will be more visible on some than others.

Step 3

Download the app Voice Tools. Go to the Tone Section and hold down the note E3 (165 Hz).

Step 4

Say the sound “EEE” matching the note E3. Check to see if your thyroid notch slightly rises. You can feel this as well by placing your hand gently over your throat.

Step 5

Say the sound “AHH” matching the note E3. Check to see if your thyroid notch lowers. You can feel this as well by placing your hand gently over your throat.

Step 6

Go back and forth between the “EEE” and “AHH” sound at the note E3. Try to stay on the same pitch.

Can you hear how the sound brightens or darkens even when your pitch remains the same? Pretty cool, right?!
